Cars and petrol......

My next car..........????

The exhaust fell off my car today ~ well that is not totally true ~ the back part came down, so it was hanging on for dear life!!! There has been a clanking noise coming from underneath for the last few days and I have been meaning to have a look under the back and see if anything looked 'clanky!!' ~ not that I would have the slightest idea what I was looking for ha ha!!

Anyway ~ this morning I pulled into the carpark at the school and one of the other Mums (who had followed me in), came over and told me that my exhaust was hanging down and 'bouncing'.....after a quick look I realised that this would be the clanking (I can't work out how I hadn't noticed it myself!!!). I dropped the kids at school, and headed to the garage to get it looked at. I hate my car going to the garage ~ it always ends up meaning that my bank account gets a shock. Everytime it goes in for a service ~ I sit all day, waiting for the phone to ring (with the bad news).....Anyway ~ I got to the garage and got out and walked over to the mechanic ~ who asked how he could help, I pointed at the exhaust and said I thought I had a problem with it ~ he agreed and told me to give him the keys and he'd have a look. I stood back while he put it on the ramp and had a look. There was a bit of oohing and ahhing before he came into the waiting area and told me that the bracket at the back and something else (that I couldn't quite catch) ~ had come off and would need fixing. I nodded and he proceeded to go back out and started to fix the car. About 10 minutes later he came in with the keys and told me it was all done. I started to get my purse out, when he said "No, it's OK there is no charge it was only a bracket and a rubber ring (I presume he didn't mean the kind you use in the swimming pool!!??) ~ and said not to worry about it..........I could have kissed him (obviously I held myself back ~ I am saving myself for Brad Pitt or Harrison Ford or someone like that ~ of course!!). I thanked him many times (I think he thought I was a bit mad!!), and left the garage ~ happy with the fact that another car disaster had been avoided and it had been fixed without costing a penny (yippee!!!).

Next I made the worst decision of the day and decided to go and fill up with petrol ~ WELL ~ there was a que about a mile long ~ and I had no choice but to sit in it, once I had pulled in!! (There is a strike being threatened this weekend by petrol tanker drivers , which seems to be resulting in some panic buying!!), I nearly fainted when I saw the price of the perol ~ it just gets more expensive every day. I filled up and got back in the car and had a moan to myself (I quite often have a moan to myself in the car ~ anyone watching would think I was a complete nutter tee hee!!)........
I have come to the conclusion that I am not going to be able to run the car much longer ~ if petrol prices carry on like they are ~ so have decided that the way forward may be to invest in a horse and cart!!! I think that the children would love to be clip clopping along the road every morning to the school (as long as it didn't rain!!) ~ BUT ~ getting to my Mums might be a problem, as she lives a 5 hour car drive away!! It would take us about a week to get there ha ha!!! I wish a horse and cart was the best choice ~ but obviously it isn't ~ so a newer car (can't afford brand new ~ so newish will have to do!!) ~ will be the answer, one with a smaller engine, which will be more economical on petrol.......I wish that I could afford the diamond encrusted car that I blogged about a few days ago ~ but unless I win the lottery in the next few months ~ that isn't looking likely (ha ha!!). I am hoping to make an appointment with the bank over the next few weeks ~ fitting it in is a problem when you have children with you all the time !! ~ and then I can start car shopping (no doubt I will like every car that is totally out of my price range!!).
Ah well ~ maybe oneday Harrison Ford will come and whisk me away in the diamond encrusted car...............dream dream!!!!!!

I can't believe the mechanic didn't charge you anything! Lucky you!

We just bought a minivan last summer, and it uses so much gas. I have a heart attack every time I fill my tank.

Hi Christy ~ I have used that garage for as long as I have lived here (10 years), and that is the first time I have gone in there and NOT paid a penny ~ I was very pleasantly suprised!!
I know how you feel ~ everytime I fill my car it costs me more and more ~ it surely has to end somewhere!!

gosh, tabitha,
what a nice guy... it isn't often that a mechanic will work his magic for free.
the clydesdale is beautiful but definitely not practical (at least not without a covered cart, lol)!!!
good luck car shopping; i have a petrol guzzler and have just decided not to drive it any more than i must:/
love,
dani

Petrol prices are really sky high. Here it's just the same - at least I keep reading that in the newspaper and hearing it from my husband. Would you believe that I can actually count the times I've gone for petrol myself on one hand??? It's not something I'm proud of, but if I can avoid going myself, then I will.

I should probably add that I only have the car on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, my non-working days.

I hope you'll be able to do some car shopping soon. I'm sure the kids would love to "bling" it up with a little glitter to make it look like the diamond car!

Hugs,
Tania

He must of liked you VERY much not to charge you for the work he did!(cough cough!!!)
Was he wearing a wedding ring? A man like that could come in useful!
With the price of fuel i think you won't be the only one with a horse and cart! ( we would need a clydesdale)
Love Amanda xx

Hi there Dani ~ I was quite suprised too ~ maybe he saw the 'oh my god I really can't afford this' look on my face and felt sorry for me LOL!!!
I think the horse and cart thing has been shelved for now ~ I couldn't be doing with all the horse poo and the riding hat would just ruin my hair ha ha!!!
I am also getting to the point where I don't use the car unless I have to ~ wish we lived closer to the school so we could walk, but we live 6 miles away!!!

Hi Tania ~ I really wish that I could avoid filling up the car (that was about the only way my ex husband was usefull ~ ha ha!!!). It looks like the tanker strike will go ahead here ~ thank goodness I have a full tank!!
Take care ~

I didn't check out the wedding ring ~ I am saving myself for Harrison don't you know LOL!!!
Believe it or not, but there are people where I live who do actually have horses and carts (honestly!!!), I moan about them every time I get stuck behind them on one of the little country roads ha ha!!!!

WOW! I think I WOULD have kissed him! LOL!

I know what you mean about petrol, although it's even more expensive where you are, always has been, so I don't envy you.

I reckon battery operated cars are the goer - but why are they so damn expensive to buy in the first place??

We aren't paying for petrol on our car now as DH salary sacrificed the car this year. I mean, we DO pay for it - but it's out of our wage before tax or some such thing I dont understand! ROFL!

I am so grateful because last week the pump came to $112 - to FILL the car!! But I just got out the petrol card and went inside and didnt have to try and find a days wage to pay for it!

The problem is everything is going up becuase of petrol *sigh*

I will join you with the horse and cart, but imagine how long it would take to get to dancing lesson!!! ;p

Hi there Juz,
It is getting just ridiculous ~ I have really started to feel it in this last month ~ the pinch is definitly on!! I used to take the children all over the place at the weekends, but we tend to stay more locally ~ as it just costs so much (which is sad really!!).
I just pray that there is a point where it all has to stop ~ our government has to do something (mind you ~ knowing them maybe not ha ha!!!).
Hope you are well ~ will be over to visit you later!!

Hi Tabitha

What an awesome mechanic to fix your car so quickly on the spot and the best part of all, free of charge. Fantastic.

We filled our car up today and it cost $60, which is considered a sky high price. Our full tank won't even last the week. Although we are really thinking about every trip we make and like you, thinking about alternative solutions to cope with these huge prices.

Love
Elise
