Today is the last day of March, yes I know that I am stating the obvious there...but, I cannot believe that it can be April already.....it was only Christmas yesterday.....or that is how it feels to me.
The clocks went forward an hour here at the weekend, which is all very lovely, now we have lighter nights, we can do more in the evenings and soon it will be BBQ weather (yes, I am jumping the gun there a bit!!!). Unfortunately the change in the time has completely thrown the kids body clocks (and mine for that matter!!)....which resulted in them moaning at bedtime that they were 'NOT TIRED' and did not want to go to bed as it wasn't dark outside (all very confusing I know!!!). Eventually they did go to bed.
When I eventually went to bed, at 10pm (which was really 9pm....hope you are not too confussed and are keeping up!!!), I soon realised what the kids had been moaning about. Although it wasn't light outside, I was not tired, and found myself lying there with time to think (always a bad thing to do!!!).
I started to think about the children and how much I love them. There are times when I can't believe they are 6 and 10, I sometimes feel like someone has pressed the fast forward button and speeded up the time from when they were born to now! I remember very clearly when Daniel was born, and I held him in my arms, he was seconds old - the midwife said to me, "make the most of every minute, because before you know it, you will be blowing out that first birthday candle". At the time, him even being a year old felt like light years away, and now my precious baby is 10....then there is Lauren, who didn't seem to be a baby for 5 minutes, she grew up so fast, walking at 10 months and talking in sentences not long after, she has always been ahead of her time (maybe why she thinks she is a teenager now - ha ha). It scares me sometimes (although I don't know why!), that they are growing up and I want to make the most of every second - I wish I had a remote control to slow the time down......
Then the usual things started to drift in and out of my head......how much I miss my Mum and my Sister, they live quite a long drive away and I don't see them very often. I sometimes feel that after my Dad died, we all drifted apart, my Mum married Terry and made a new life for herself (which I am so glad that she did), Mel got married and had her family, I got married and moved away. Although we are still close and speak to each other often, I definitly do not see them as often as I would like (a 250 mile drive each way makes sure of that!).
I then started to think of the holiday next week and what I would pack (or rather what I would NOT pack). I am going away with a friend of mine and her 2 children, for a week in Devon (please God, let it not rain all next week...), we have hired a people carrier so that we can all travel there together in one vehicle, makes life alot easier....but means that we are restricted for space. SO.....unlike my last trip away, when I visited my Mum, and I packed nearly the whole contents of the house (hehe), this time I have to be controlled, as we have to fit all our stuff in one large holdall. I didn't think that this was worrying me, until I lay there last night trying to decide how many pairs of socks to take and wondering how the hell I will fit all our stuff in one bag...........
Next I started to worry about money (this always creeps into my mind somewhere), and making sure that everything is paid on time (even though most of the bills are paid direct from the bank). I never used to worry about money, until I split with my (now ex), husband....and the realisation set in that I have to support 2 children all on my own (this initially caused mass panic ). I have come to the conclusion that if the months were shorter and I earnt about double what I do, then life would be just peachy (we can all dream..)
Eventually, after worrying about just about everything that I could think of....including whether I had switched off the cooker (I had to get out of bed and double check...told you I am going crazy!!), I finally got to sleep at about 1am, which was really midnight......
When the alarm went off at 6am (really 5am), this morning, I was completely knackered and got out of bed in a very bad mood (which continued all day). So, in closing, I just want to apologise to everyone in the world that I was grumpy to today, including the stupid man who pulled out infront of me on the school run (and got shouted and tooted at - yes I do road rage aswell!!)...I am very sorry that I was such a grouch .......it wasn't my fault, I blame it on the silly person who decided changing the clocks was a good idea - and who will completely confuse us all again later in the year, by putting them back an hour again!!!!!!

......It's raining.....again....
So much for my post the other day, where I spoke of the sunshine and feeling happy....since I typed those words, all it has done is rain (typical english weather - again!!).
Never mind, it has given me the perfect excuse to go nowehere and do nothing...I am going to make a start on sorting out the childrens bedroom and getting it painted etc, which is long overdue. I also need to have a general tidy out and tidy up and clean the carpets (YES - my life is that boring!!!!)
Yesterday was the funeral of the little girl that went to school with Daniel, who died suddenly a week or so back. I was hoping that the nice sunshine would hold out until Friday, but the rain came, Lauren said that she thought that it was heaven crying (she is so sweet).
On a more cheerful note, I have found some photos taken at Laurens birthday party and of Daniel when he went on the climbing wall, so I will try and up load them...I may get the hang of it eventually.

I AM GOING CRAZY!!
Today I decided I am going crazy....
I lost my door keys (well they were where I left them - I just couldn't remember where that was..)
I spent the whole day convinced it was Tuesday (it is actually Wednesday...damn Bank Holidays confusing me....)
I locked myself out of the car (remembered the keys were in the boot....AS I SHUT IT!!!!)
I forgot that the children were going to friends after school.....and went to the school to pick them up anyway......
AND.... to top it all off - when I went in the fridge for my easter chocolate treat to myself (a cadburys cream egg =) it had gone.....after cursing the children (I was convinced one of them had eaten it), and stomping about for a bit - I suddenly had this flash back to last night where I sat and scoffed it with a cup of tea......
I am hoping that this general lack of a memory is a temporary thing and something to do with the fact I am totally knackered (still not recovered from that awful trip back from wales), and not something more permanant....I am only 37 for gods sake, what will I be like at 77????? - maybe there is just no hope for me!!!!!
Had better go, there was something really important that I needed to do........if only I could remember what it was (ha ha!!!!!).......

A much needed break
The view from Mums new house - really lovely!! - The mountain in the background is Snowdon!!!! Dan and Lauren - with Grandma and Grandad...
Milly cat sitting in her favourite place!!
Brandy - my mums other little 'baby'!!!!
Two sleepy kids, playing on a nintendo DS!!!!
This came out the wrong way - am useless at uploading photos!!!!
We are back, after a much needed 4 days away (well 3 days really with all the travelling!!). We left as planned on Friday morning (I set the alarm for 4am and actually got up - miracle!!). The children were great and we were all packed and ready to go by 5am.... we watched it getting lighter and lighter as we drove along and the children were so excited as the sun got higher in the sky (they aren't often out and about at that time in the morning!!). We only had to make one emergency toilet break, Lauren crossed her legs for about 10 miles as we missed the planned stop at a petrol station, I just drove past it and forgot to stop (I blame the early start!!).
We arrived at my Mum and Step Dads house at about 10am, which was not bad going, 5 hours was what I had thought it would take. The children spent ages exploring Grandmas new house (this is our first visit to their new place). I must admit it is a really lovely house with beautiful views over snowdonia and the surrounding area (photos will hopefully follow....I am getting no better at uploading them!!).
We had a fantastic weekend, exploring and a bit of retail therapy (there is a great shopping complex not far from my Mums new house...which is an added bonus!) I helped Lauren to make an Easter bonnet, which she wore most of the weekend. It was lovely to actually have a lie in (Lauren came in every morning at 6am singing into her High School Musical microphone!!! - but I managed to ignore her and she then went in to sing to Grandma ha ha!!). It made such a big difference to have someone else there to have the children, if only for a short time and I enjoyed a little bit of freedom (I love my children dearly, but a bit of 'ME' time was a welcome change!!).
All in all, we were totally spoilt, my mum is such a good cook, so there was fab food, lovely surroundings and of course 'Grandma and Grandad' too!!! The time went too fast and the children were really sad to leave, but unfortunately we had to.
The trip back was a nightmare from start to finish....there was an accident on the M56, so we basically sat there for about an hour, moving at snail speed (I hate the motorways!!). The M6 was no better and the other roads were mad too (serves me right travelling back in the afternoon of a Bank Holiday!!!! - I really should know better!!). We finally arrived back here at 11.30pm and the children (who both slept in the car - lucky things!!), went straight into bed....Poor me on the other hand had to unpack the car and then get everything ready for today (the children are back to school). I finally fell (literally), into bed at about 12.30 and must admit that I felt like killing the alarm when it went off at 7am (decided I deserved an extra hour in bed - 6am is the order of the day during the week!!!!).
Now that the break is over, we have 2 weeks until we are on our next break, we have a week booked in Devon with my good friend Jane and her children, Sam and Lucy. The children aren't excited yet, they usually save that for the night before....and don't sleep!!!
In the meantime, it is back to reality, with a truck load of washing, ironing and all the other joys that I have managed to avoid (for the last 4 days at least!!). Back to the mad school run this morning (and again this afternoon), and back to real, normal life!!! I really loved the break away, but it is nice to be back home....with all the madness that involves (not to mention the noise, mess etc etc etc...).
I have the next break away marked on the calendar, so will just have to cross off the days until we are off again.

Help!!!!
Why is it that I find it totally impossible to pack 'a few things' for our long weekend away? We are only going away for a few days, we leave Friday and come back Monday....BUT I seem to have packed the whole contents of every wardrobe and drawer in the house!!!!
I remember (fondly) the days, before children, when I could throw a change of undies and a lipstick in my handbag and that was me 'packed' for the weekend, NOW it is a mamoth task just to fit all the kids stuff in the car. Lauren has packed a backpack, that contains her slippers, various books, colouring pencils, a lip gloss (she takes after her mother), her High School Musical Microphone???, her secret diary, stickers, a wool hat and her girly hair clips - I think it will weigh more than she does!!!! Daniel on the other hand has a single item in his backpack....a Doctor Who book - now that is what I call travelling light!!!!!

Sadness
Today Daniel came home from school with some very sad news, one of his classmates, a girl who he started with in reception class and has shared his school life with up to now - has died. She was only 10 years old, the same age as my precious son, and had a heart attack and died (I think that she had a pre exisiting heart problem). It is just so so sad and my heart is with her poor parents at this time. How the hell do you cope with something like that, it doesn't bear thinking about and is certainly a reality check. Yet another reminder that life can be harsh and a real git at times, and no one knows what tomorrow will bring.
Rest in peace Danielle, may you forever soar on angels wings XXXX

That Friday Feeling!!
It is Friday at last....YIPPPPEEEEE!!!!! I have had a really hectic week, what with parents evening, work, more work, cleaning, tidying and just being a mother with 2 children (you get the picture).
I have a bottle of wine, nicely cooling in the fridge and the cork screw is impatiently waiting on the kitchen side.....just as soon as the kids are in bed, I am having a glass of wine or 2 (it has been that kind of week!!!!).
I don't know why I get excited about the weekends, because they are always totally mad, ballet, judo, birthday parties (2 this weekend) and I end up being just as rushed as on a weekday....BUT
do you know what, I don't care - I love being with the children, having them with me, taking them to do what makes them happy, getting them ready to go to yet another birthday party...I love it all and most of all I love them.
Tomorrow is Laurens ballet and tap exams, so we have a really early start....it will take me at least an hour to get her hair in the dreaded 'bun', and make sure her uniform is right...I am going to charge the camera battery and hopefully get some nice photos of her. On the subject of cameras, I have ordered my new camera and it should be here in 7 - 10 days, so I am waiting (excitedly), for that to come!!!! Be ready for lots of (very bad) photos while I am learning (could be painful!!!) and I have promised myself that I will read the manual thoroughly this time.....I am sure I will need lots of glasses of wine to tackle that!!!! X

Ordinary Miracle

Photo Envy
I have decided to buy a new camera.....not very exciting I know, but for years I have taken photos of the children and they have come out blurry or not at all. I look at the photos that other people take and post on their blogs and some of them are so lovely....(I think I have photo envy ha ha.), I wish I could capture some of the wonderful moments that I share with the children in a more natural way and for them to actually come out (for a change!!). I often visit a blog called untanglingknots, which is written by a really lovely lady called Karla (I hope she will not mind me mentioning her!), and she posts some really beautiful photos of her family, amongst other things. So, on her recommendation I am going on a mission this weekend, my mission, is to find a Canon Powershot G9 Digital Camera, and maybe some added little extras (depending on how much I can sweet talk the sales guy.....and how much hard earned cash I decide to part with!!).
Then I will have to come home with my new little friend (I mean the camera....not the sales guy!), and try and break the habit of a lifetime, that being my lack of ability to read instruction manuals!!! I have been the same all my life (and at 37 I have decided that I am well past the point of changing now), I never read the manual or instructions and try to just fly by the seat of my pants and hope I get it right!!! BUT this time I am going to read them, as I am never going to learn the art of decent photo taking otherwise (which I am sure is more technical than reading the instruction book, but I need to start somewhere).
Watch out David Bailey, here I come!!!!

Supersonic Saturday
Today, as you may have noticed is Saturday...and it has been totally MAD!!!! Gone are the days when I managed to get a lie in (infact they waved bye bye the day I had Daniel.....), now the weekends are one big whirlwind....We have to be at Laurens ballet early, so that means we have to be up really REALLY early so that I can spend at least 20 years getting her hair just so!
Although her hair is a long bob, she is currently studying for her first ballet and tap exams, during which she has to wear her hair up....in a bun (of all things!). I decided that this was totally impossible and would NEVER happen, that was until I went to the class last week and was assured by the principle of the ballet school that YES....it was totally possible!!!!
After at least a thousand tries I think that I have finally mastered it (to a fashion).....with the help of a wonderful spray called FRUCTIS EXTREME GEL SPRAY. The trick apparently is to gel it back and then spray the hair so it does not move. Believe me, after the amount that I sprayed on it this morning, I doubt her hair will ever move again....
She has her exams next Saturday, so she will be prancing around the house (again), all week and then ruining the kitchen floor (just a bit more!), with her tap shoes. Of course there will be an update next weekend of how she does.....and hopefully some photos of the dreaded bun.....my camera battery decided to die on me the minute I tried to take a photo, typical!!!
Well after ballet we literally ran in and then out of the house and then went shopping.....for yet another birthday present. The children are both constantly coming home with party invites, which is all very lovely for them, but not that good for poor old me, who has to fork out for yet another present, card, paper etc etc (yes my middle name is scrooge!!). I jokingly told them that they would have to try and not be so nice to people and then they would not get as many invites, but that was met with total disapproval ha ha (I was honestly joking....really).
Once that was completed, together with another visit to the ballet uniform shop and to the local football shop (Portsmouth is the team that my darling son supports!!!), we have finally headed home to more madness.
Lauren has to go in the bath so that I can try and wash the 3 tonnes of hair gel out of her hair and then I have to jump in the shower, because shock of shocks I am going OUT (yes you may have fainted at this point...but I AM GOING OUT!!!!!!). You may have guessed from that cheering that it does not happen all that often, due to babysitter shortages and money etc etc....
My friend Natalie has reached that wonderful milestone in life of being 40, and so a group of about 17 of us are going to the local (and very nice!), chinese restaurant for a little celebration and some alcohol (yippeeeeeeee!!!!!). I am really looking forward to it, nice food, nice wine, nice company, adult conversation, you get the picture.....
Well, I had better hurry myself along, it is 4.30 pm and I am meeting everyone out at 7.30, so it will take me that long to put on my slap, do my hair and generally spruce myself up.... and first I have to remove hair gel from my darling daughters hair.....wish me luck, I get the feeling I will be needing it XX

A Bum deal!!
Today was the dreaded day... when I had to go to the doctors for that most favourite of womens things.....The Smear!!!!
I left the children with a friend of mine, obviously taking them with me is not an option, bad enough that I have to go at all, without having 2 little helpers, trying to assist the nurse in her dealings!!!!
Anyway, off I went and got it over with. On returning to my friends to pick up the children, they were both very concerned as to why I had been at the Doctors and what was wrong with me etc etc. Not wanting them to be worried, I told them that I was fine andf it was only a smear test...WELL.... that was the worst thing that I could have done. So started a very heated discussion between the two little darlings as to what exactly it was. After some time discussing it, they had both come up with every possible idea they had of what it was.....all wrong of course!! Then, with a big smile on her face Lauren shouted out "I know what it is......it's where you go to the Doctors so they can look up your bum"........ needless to say....there was alot of laughter and no one actually corrected her.......she is only 6 so I have plenty of time to put her straight before she has the joy of having one herself...... as my Grandma would say "Out of the mouth of babes!!"
